Why Willenhall still makes the best handles

A small town in the Black Country held the lock trade of the world, and still holds its hand skills.

Why Willenhall still makes the best handles

Willenhall made locks before it made anything else. By the nineteenth century the town counted hundreds of workshops within walking distance of one another, and a family name on a lock was a guarantee that travelled further than the family did.

What survives is not the volume but the sequence: forge, mill, hand-fettle, assemble, test by hand. Each of our fourteen pieces passes through the same order of operations, and each is signed on the rose where the fixing hides it.

It is slower. Six to eight weeks for a lever is not a delay; it is the time a piece takes when a person finishes it.
